Small lab in Los Angeles for making Natural Face Creams?

Hi All,

My name is Jayme! I'm new here and glad to have a place to connect with others and ask questions! I'm just starting a line with my husband where we are importing some special ingredients.

Wondering if anyone knows a lab in the Los Angeles area that can make small amounts of face cream like (15 lbs) if I know the ingredients and can give them a sample. Does anyone have any suggestions on a lab that won't have huge minimums? We'd like to start with 100 or so 1.7oz jars of cream. We want our line to have all natural preservatives and emulsifiers etc. No PEGs, Parabens etc.

Thanks so much for any resources!

Jayme

Jayme,

I am afraid you are out of luck here. Most of the labs require 1000+ pieces or 55 gallons of product to be made if they decide to bother. But you can check our Rainshadow Labs. Their minimum is 5 gallons for custom formula. It's still more than you are stating, but still doable.

Just out of curiosity, what special ingredients are you importing?

Hi Natalia,

Thanks for letting me know about Rainshadow Labs! I will definitely check it out. I was surprised that no one answered me and guessed most people make it themselves.

Thanks again!

Jayme

Jayme,

I apoligize if it seemed no one was willing to help you.  Since this is a handmade beauty industry community, most everyone here handcrafts the products they sell themselves and/or they own the manufacturing facility with employees that help handcraft them.

We weren't ignoring you or your question. It was just not one that most of us could answer for you adequately or give you reference for so you could find the answer for yourself.

Thanks for asking and understanding.

Hi Ginger,

Thanks so much for the clarification. I didn't think anyone was ignoring me at all... just surprised that no one had any recommendations. Then I realized that most people are making their own. I also assumed that if people's orders got large enough, they would need a lab but now you are sharing that they have their own labs. I'm completely new to this industry. I really appreciate any future guidance and was happy to learn about Rainshadow Labs.

Sending positive energy your way,

Jayme

Let me clarify even further by saying that it's more like manufacturing facilities rather than labs. Labs in this industry are usually known as testing labs, where we send sample of our products for testing of  viability, preservative efficacy and such. Most of us do our own formulating and R & D or products, as well as the manufacturing, even if it's larger orders. We actually do have companies who handle very large as well as a large number of orders among us in the Indie community.

Check out Bella Lucce sometime. Lela is one of our own card carrying Indie Beauty Network members, who like most of us, started in her home kitchen.  Bella Lucce is an international company with a large presence in the beauty world and we are very proud of what Lela has accomplished with her handmade beauty company.

What exactly are you looking for? Are you looking for someone to reverse engineer a product? That means take a product, analyze it to get the exact formulation so it can be duplicated for a company to bring to market under their label and brand. This is not advisable, in my opinion, as it can get sticky with the original formulation owner.

Or are you looking for someone to private label products for you, to manufacture your specific formulas for you, to formulate products for you, or something else?  It may help if everyone knows exactly what you are looking for.

We're here to help if possible.  Just need more info sometimes :-)

Hi Ginger,

Thanks so much for your clarification on labs and manufacturing facilities. Yes, I've looked at Lela's Bella Lucce and she has great products. Regarding my company... some ingredients I'm importing (and going abroad in a couple weeks) and will create my own products using that ingredient and other products I'd like to private label but I want to make sure that the product doesn't have any ingredients that are on the Whole Foods banned list. It seems like a good list to go by if I'd like my products to be deemed "natural." If I can't find the right product to private label, I was considering having someone formulate and manufacture for me. That is why I was asking about labs to help. I'm still in the research stage about a couple products. It looks like Rainshadow Labs is a possibility if I wish to formulate and create my own... and add my ingredient.

Thanks a bunch for your help!

Jayme

Do you have a website for V manufacturing or contact?  Sometimes smaller scale means super high pricing but we are presently looking for one as well.  East Coast is fine also.  Thanks! :)
