Trichoptilosis is the scientific name for split ends. A split end is basically the splitting or fraying of the hair shaft. Most often split ends are caused due to excessive stress and/or heat placed on the hair. The hair shaft is made up of thousands of layers. When the outer layer, or cuticle, is damaged either by heat or chemicals, it weakens the hair and it becomes more prone to splitting. Other causes of split ends can be excessive combing and towel drying (by rubbing hair too harshly with a towel) which can also cause damage to the hair shaft.
The best way to “fix” a split end is to prevent it. This means getting your hair trimmed regularly, about every 6- 8 weeks. This will cut off the most vulnerable and exposed end pieces of the hair which can stop a split end from occurring in the first place. Folic Acid and Biotin supplements have also been found to assist in strengthening and aiding in hair health which can assist in the prevention of split ends.
Once an end has been split, there is no real way to “repair it”, but you can mask it. There are no products that are able to “heal” the split end, but some products can “seal” the split end together to make it appear healthier.
